Is Dropshipping Dead?
“Dropshipping is dead!” I’m sure you’ve heard that at least once recently. So is dropshipping dead? Not at all. This claim is nothing new, to be honest. It’s been happening since 2015 or even before that.
Telling everyone dropshipping is dead unless they buy your product is a good way to makes sales. The thing is it’s not being honest. No matter what your favorite internet guru says, it isn’t true.
It annoys me people say this because they are actually discouraging people from starting to dropship. They could have made a lot of money but they’ll never know because they never tried.
It’s important not to get lost in the noise and hysteria. What happens week by week is irrelevant. Look at the yearly trends to find out what’s really going on.
So being the rational people that we are, let’s look at this logically. Dropshipping is a business model. What is this business model? Well, it is a form of e-commerce that allows you to sell products without holding any inventory.
You as a dropshipper sell products on your site from wholesalers usually on AliExpress. Customers buy the product through your site then you buy the product from AliExpress.
They then ship the products to the customer directly. If this sounds like a great business model then you need to ask yourself why it would ever go away.
People think dropshipping is dying but they’re mistaken. It’s just changing and adapting like everything else does. Think about it, nothing stays the same. Everything molds with the times sooner or later.
Does going to the store to get a soda still exist? Yes but it’s been around for many decades. It may not look exactly the same as it did when it first emerged but it’s still there.
Now we have self-checkouts and contactless cards. Before that, we had coins and cashiers. Going to the store for a soda is still there. It’s not going away anytime soon.
Dropshipping may be getting more competitive. That doesn’t mean you can’t make money, because you certainly can. Anything good eventually becomes competitive. It just means you have to be better than everyone else.
If you know copywriting and sales you’ll be fine. If you’ve done your market research and you know how to relate to your customer you’ll be fine. The thing is most people aren’t that good at dropshipping.
They’re lazy and they copy and paste the AliExpess descriptions. They won’t remove watermarks from their photos. Their websites look scammy and untrustworthy. If you do all these things then yes, dropshipping won’t work.
But don’t blame me when you start believing all the people asking “Is dropshipping dead?”. It may as well be dead to you because you didn’t put any effort in.
Stop Asking “Is Dropshipping Dead?” and Start Taking Action
The truth is people are always going to want to buy things. People are always going to want to make money. People are also going to want to sell things without inventory.
There will always be huge wholesalers looking for marketers to sell their products better than they can. Dropshipping will always be around it just may not look the same in 10 years time.
Customers are also becoming more intelligent. They are aware that people try to sell them junk on social media. They are becoming more attuned to slimy sales tactics. The trick is to sell them high-quality items they actually want and be empathetic in the process.
It is painfully obvious when a store has put zero effort in. They try to sell the customer on all the wrong pain points. If you don’t know what baseball fans actually like buying then don’t be surprised when your store fails. Assuming these things often leads to failure.
So to conclude, Is dropshipping dead? No, it is not. Don’t listen to people when they say it. The method they have been using may be dead but the business model isn’t dead. You can’t expect the same tactics to work year after year.
After all Facebook and Instagram area always changing their advertising algorithms. That means a technique that was successful may not be anymore. But it also means there are more techniques to be discovered, implemented and profited from.
Don’t fear change, embrace it. That way you can be proactive instead of reactive. When a new opportunity arises you will be the first to act on it. You know what they say, the early birds get the worm.
